Résidence(s) croisée(s) - Montpellier site

Since 2016, the Faculty of Education has offered an annual artist residency in the fall at its Montpellier campus. At the same time, the Florian Preschool, in partnership with MO.CO., launched an annual residency program. In 2020, the two residencies were combined into a single program.

The cross-residency program consists of four key phases: a residency at the FDE-UM in the fall (creation, solo exhibition, and workshops); a residency by the same artist at the École Florian, in partnership with the MO.CO., in the spring (creation, workshops, exhibition for parents), a presentation in the form of an exhibition of work created by students from the faculty and the École Florian in May–June at the Faculty of Education, and a period dedicated to research at the start of the following academic year.

For the 2026–2027 academic year, the selected artist is Philip Berg. Trained at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier (MO.CO.-ESBA), the artist creates installations—a genre of contemporary art that refers to works combining different media and unfolding in three dimensions. He thus develops his artistic practice in multiple directions: drawing, sculpture, embroidery, and more. Participating as part of the PEI project “Weaving a Pedagogy of Artistic and Aesthetic Experience” (Tipex), Philip Berg explores the relationship between the individual and the collective.

The creation phase of the Cross-Residency(ies) will take place from September 1 to December 18, 2026 : the artist is settled in and has taken over the Cultural Space. Come meet them every afternoon, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The “Résidence(s) croisée(s)” initiative brings together the University of Montpellier’s Faculty of Education, the Florian Preschool, and MO.CO. around a shared goal: to provide an artist with a space for creation and outreach, while fostering encounters between art, education, and the public. This three-way partnership has become a must-attend event, giving art a unique place within educational settings each year. The initiative is supported by the DRAC Occitanie.
