A look at representations

Educating through images: looking to the past to shed light on the present

Education is a reflection of society, an ever-changing cultural imprint. At Montpellier University's Faculty of Education, this conviction guides our thinking and action. How do representations shape our understanding of the world? How does visual heritage interact with contemporary issues?

With this in mind, students in the Master 2 in Education and Training, Art and Cultural Mediation program, invite you to discover the exhibition Film Fixe - Regards sur les représentations. Through a selection of still films, these frozen but evocative images, the exhibition examines major social issues - the status of women, education and religion, the consumer society - and puts into perspective the educational methods of yesterday and today.

This initiative is part of a wider project: that of promoting a unique heritage, that of the CEDRHE, and reminding us that examining the history of education enables us to grasp the changes in our society. By highlighting the differences in attitudes and practices between the 1930s-1950s and the present day, the exhibition provides an opportunity to reflect on the continuities and ruptures in the transmission of knowledge.

Through this cultural mediation work by students in the MAC Master's program, the Faculty of Education is reaffirming its commitment to bringing heritage and modernity, images from the past and contemporary viewpoints into dialogue, in order to encourage essential reflection on our relationship with education and culture.
