Contemporary photography from Mali: group show in association with the NegPos photo art center
In December 2019, Patrice Loubon, director and founder of the Centre d'art photographique NegPos (Nîmes), travels to Bamako for the 12th Rencontres de la photographie, at the invitation of Malian photographer Fatoumata Diabaté, president of the Association des Femmes Photographes du Mali. NegPos is exhibiting some of its gallery's artists alongside those Fatoumata Diabaté has chosen to show in her Parcours exhibition.
Impressed by the dynamism and creativity of young Malian photographers, Patrice Loubon invited Fatoumata Diabaté to work with several of these young artists. They then decided to join forces to propose an exhibition-event on this young photography in Nîmes and Paris during the winter of 2020.
In France, Malian photography is best known through two major figures, mainly documenting the 50s and 60s: Seydou Keita, studio photographer (exhibited at the Grand Palais in 2016) and Malick Sidibé, studio photographer and photo-reporter (exhibited at the Fondation Cartier in 2017). These two artists have found a successor in the younger generation, heirs to this studio photography but who have opened up to other genres, reportage of course, and above all staging. These photographers don't hesitate to play with their images to tell their own stories and, from their own point of view, the contemporary world.
The themes addressed are wide-ranging and resonate with current events. These include identity, traditions, daily life and religion.
In this exhibition-event, a special place is given to women photographers (10 are represented), reflecting their growing involvement in this artistic field in Mali and elsewhere.
Postponed to 2021-2022 due to the health crisis, the event entitled RESIST(E) III MALI Photographie contemporaine du Mali, the first large-scale event devoted to contemporary Malian photography, will be held between late November 2021 and January 2022 in Nîmes (Galerie NegPos-FotoLoft, MakerSpace NegPos, IFME, FDE Inspé, CAUE du Gard) and upstream from May 2021 in the 12th arrondissement in Paris (Le 100 ecs) and in Arles (Galerie Aux Docks D'Arles).
Opening: Wednesday, December 1, 6 p.m.
