Schools at the heart of the ecological transition

Sylvain Wagnon

Faced with the urgency and scale of environmental challenges, schools play a fundamental role in preparing tomorrow's society and must take stock of the new demands placed upon them. This is what Corine Martel and Sylvain Wagnon propose in this book.

It is necessary to learn "eco-friendly habits," but also to understand their meaning and significance, since it is a matter of showing solidarity with all human beings and giving our planet a future. It is essential to address ecological issues through the prism of different school subjects, provided that we see how all this "forms a system" in order to have a comprehensive and clear vision of the challenges facing civilization.

And this applies to all aspects of everyday school life: energy consumption and food, waste production and the water cycle, greening school playgrounds... but also all teaching practices, knowledge transfer, and the development of mutual aid. The entire school, in close collaboration with local partners, must collectively commit to embodying a new way of living in the world.

Corine Martel and Sylvain Wagnon draw on research findings and provide numerous examples of concrete initiatives and proposals. They provide us with a real roadmap to ensure that schools are not only at the heart of the ecological transition, but also at the forefront.
